After graduating from college
with a degree in art I began working as a carpenter
. I was very drawn to traditional Japanese house
construction as an inspiration for my carpentry.
Later, when I was studying toward my Masters degree
in Architecture at MIT in the late 1970's, I
started to research "feng shui", the system that
formed the foundation for these incredible
buildings.
My first exposure to feng
shui was in
the courses I took on East Asian Architecture. I
studied many of the ancient feng shui classics and
analyzed how these age old concepts could apply to
building in the modern world. I was aided in my
research at MIT by Gunther Nitzche, a professor of
Asian architecture who had spent over ten years in
Japan studying the geomantic principles that are at
the core of traditional Japanese building and
garden design. Also during this period I had the
good fortune to meet and study with the late Paul
Sun, a Chinese-American architect and traditional
form and compass school feng shui expert.
After several
years studying and practicing the traditional
schools of feng shui, in 1987 I begin studying with
Professor Lin Yun, the grand master of Black Sect
feng shui. His is a more eclectic
approach which draws on many
sources including traditional form school feng
shui, Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Taoism,
Confucianism and Chinese folk belief. Since the
eighties I studied and traveled with Professor Lin
in Boston, New York, California, and Taiwan,
learning the theory and techniques of Black Sect
feng shui. While different from the systems I had
studied previously all of the schools of feng shui
are ultimately based on the concept of "ch'i", or
life energy.
In recent years I have traveled
in Asia researching ancient and contemporary feng
shui sites in China, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan,
and studying with contemporary feng shui masters,
including Professor Wang Yu De in China.
Accompanying my study and
practice of the various feng shui schools over the
last two decades, my continuing study of
traditional Chinese philosophy and internal arts
with Dr. Fred Wu, T.T. Liang , Kwan Sai-Hung, and
Chu Gin Soon and my personal research in the US and
Asia has deepened my understanding of Tao,
Yin-Yang, Five Elements, I-ching, Chinese
astrology, and other traditional philosophies that
form the basis of feng shui theory.
My feng shui study and practice
over the last two decades has provided me with
profound insights into the nature and behaviour of
ch'i in the natural and built physical environment.
I have incorporated these principles into my
architectural work and consulted on a wide range of
residential, commercial, and institutional
situations internationally. In my work as a
registered architect I try to understand how these age old
concepts apply to building in the modern world.
Although some of the techniques seem bound to
Chinese culture, ch'i is a physical and spiritual
reality, and I have found that this ancient art and
science is a very powerful tool to achieve
harmonious environments for living and working,
increasing the prospects for health, prosperity,
and well-being.
